Chapter 4 Band is a Melbourne-based four-piece band that plays a unique blend of funky Sunday session tunes. Our music covers a wide range of genres, from blues to rock, jazz to pop, and all of it is sure to get your feet tapping.
Our tunes lend themselves to a cruisy toe-tapping Sunday sesh at winebars and pubs as well as corporate and private events. If you’re looking for a band to liven up your next event, look no further than Chapter 4 Band.

We are a four-piece band based in Melbourne featuring Paula Fleming on vocals, Doug Berge on keys, Phil Sheppard on strings and Michael Giannone on drums.
Paula has performed 60's, 70's and 80's rock songs in the pub and club scene around Canberra for many years, extending to Townsville rock n roll and a cameo with the Navy band. For any Grease fans in the audience, Paula's influences include Sandy (Olivia Newton John), but a stronger connection with Rizzo motivated Paula towards the rock genre. One of her most memorable moments was supporting Bananas in Pyjamas in a rock n roll act. Another moment (a more dubious accolade) was being thrown a 10 cent piece to stop playing, so the dear ol' lady could hear her pokies!
Meeting new friends after a move to Melbourne, Paula turned her cycling network into a musical network and a new project developed. Covid and a couple of chapters later, the four-piece has settled into a new rhythm.
Doug’s first band, The Gordon Bennet, played original songs he wrote with the guitarist but never quite achieved its goal of becoming the Beatles with a Stravinsky flavour. Since then he’s played in numerous others which have provided many highlights: playing Deep Purple tunes on a flatbed truck at a bikie club family day, with wet tee shirt competitions between sets; literally rocking the hundred year old floor of Ballarat’s Lydiard Hotel in a sixties cover band; trying to play jazz fusion in a band of eastern European emigres whose common language was broken English. And now this …
After an excess of music exams and Brandenburg concertos Phil escaped the classical scene. Influenced by the "Dunedin sound" he slipped into the indie world with some school mates, picking up the electric bass and joining the four-piece Yorkie and the Bricklayer. A few years later, with a burgeoning interest in jazz harmony, Phil joined a jazz trio in Hamilton (NZ), with a regular spot at a local cafe.
More recently, a renewed focus on the bass has seen Phil explore his indie roots while also diving into genres such as soul, R&B, latin, reggae, funk and hip-hop. Following the tradition set by many players including the legendary James Jamerson, Phil enjoys the deep thud of flat wound strings on the precision bass which fits perfectly into the soul and R&B tones of Chapter 4.
Michael started playing drums for the high school band in 1980. The high school needed a drummer for the music class and musical. Mostly self taught, Michael did have brief periods where he received instruction from a number of excellent drum teachers, including a teacher, who played with Frank Zappa. During the 80’s and 90’s Michael worked as a musician for a number of Jazz bands, Big bands and also work as a recording session musician, and head of music for a number of music schools.
As a working musician and teacher, did take its toll and eventually Michael retired from music and teaching to pursue a career in IT.
During 2019, Michael made the decision to rekindle his passion for music and drumming. It took 2 years to get his chops back and progress to a level of performance. In 2020, Michael auditioned and joined the Diamond Valley Big band and a Local Rock band. However, when he met the talented members of the now Chapter4 band, he knew he had found a group of performers who he could work with. I have now found a new musical home.
